Mark Emberton is Professor of Interventional Oncology within the Division of Surgery and Dean of the Faculty of Medical Science at University College London. He is clinically active and holds the position of Honorary Consultant Urologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust where he works as a specialist in prostate cancer. His academic work has focused on developing novel diagnostic strategies and new therapies for men with prostate cancer. His research has resulted in the transformation of both the diagnostic and therapeutic pathways. These have been incorporated into international guidelines. He has published over 500 peer review papers, holds a large grant portfolio, and lectures widely around the world and holds international honorary professorships. He is a founding Pioneer of the charity Prostate Cancer UK.
Dr. Barentsz has had an impressive career, starting as an MD in 1980 and obtaining his research PhD in 1990 He has been a trailblazing professor of radiology since 1998 and recently works at the Division of Medical Imaging at the Andros Clinics. His groundbreaking research has left an indelible mark on the field, specifically through the implementation of PI-RADS, which has become the gold standard for prostate MRI worldwide. His influential '4M' paper and other publications have significantly influenced European and Dutch prostate cancer guidelines, now recommending prostate MRI prior to biopsy. Furthermore, Dr. Barentsz's innovative work has sparked a resurgence in ferumoxtran-10 MRI, utilizing dextran-coated iron nanoparticles as an MRI contrast agent to detect 2mm lymph node micro-metastases. This cutting-edge technology is currently undergoing a marketing approval trial in Germany, Switzerland, and The Netherlands, poised to revolutionize the field of medical imaging. Dr. Arvin George is a urologic surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and management of genitourinary cancers. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Urology and Director of Prostate Cancer Programs at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. After obtaining his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, he completed his Urology Residency at the Smith Institute for Urology, Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. He also completed his Endourology fellowship in New York gaining additional subspecialty expertise in robotic, laparoscopic, and percutaneous surgery. Subsequently, he completed a Urologic Oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health. Dr. George’s clinical practice includes both surgical and non-operative management of prostate, kidney, and upper tract urothelial cancers. His research interests include minimally invasive and image-guided treatments, functional prostate imaging and focal therapy for prostate cancer. Dr. George’s research focuses on the use of prostate MRI, MR/Ultrasound fusion-guided prostate biopsy, and focal therapy for prostate cancer. His research aims to identify appropriate use for imaging in diagnosis, risk stratification, and management of prostate cancer including active surveillance and selection/treatment of patients with novel focal therapy modalities.
Dr. Eric Barret is a urological surgeon at the Montsouris Institute in Paris, France. He is a recognized expert in minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of urological cancer, and particularly prostate cancer. In addition to extensive experience in robotic surgery, he is engaged in improving the management of localized prostate cancer, and for selected patients offers innovative, less invasive therapeutic approaches such as focal therapy. He has been involved in a number of studies in this field, including evaluating the different energy sources for focal approach such as HIFU, cryotherapy, vascular targeted photodynamic therapy and irreversible electroporation. In addition to these clinical activities, Dr. Barret is an active academic urologist and writer, with many international publications to his credit. He chairs the Ablative Group of the EAU-Section of EndoUro Technology (ESEUT) and he is involved in ongoing collaborations in urological oncology and minimally invasive surgery.
Prof. Dr. Jurgen Fütterer is an interventional radiologist and full professor at both the Department of Medical Imaging at Radboud University Medical Center (Radboudumc) and the Robotics and Mechatronics group at the University of Twente. He specializes in MRI-guided interventions and focal therapy for prostate cancer. At Radboudumc, he leads the Minimally Invasive Image-Guided Interventions Center (MAGIC), a research group he founded in 2012 that focuses on advancing image-guided oncological treatments.
Francesco Giganti is Associate Professor of Radiology at University College London and Consultant Radiologist at University College London Hospital. After his training in Italy, he moved to London, UK, where he obtained his PhD in prostate MRI at University College London. Francesco’s main area of expertise is genitourinary imaging, with a specific interest in prostate MRI during active surveillance (PRECISE score), prostate image quality (PI-QUAL score) and prostate MRI after focal treatment (PI-FAB score). He is an expert in teaching prostate MRI for radiologists and urologists, and part of the team commissioned by European Association of Urology to deliver Europe- wide training courses. He is currently the chair of the ESUR Prostate MRI working group and a member of the PI-RADS steering committee.
Background Mr Taimur T. Shah is a clinical senior lecturer and consultant urologist at Imperial College London (ICL). He has a sub-specialist interest in prostate cancer diagnostics, imaging, robotic surgery, focal therapy (high intensity focused ultrasound and cryotherapy) for prostate cancer and minimally invasive treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He has published extensively in peer- reviewed journals within these fields and been invited to give presentations nationally and internationally. Mr Shah qualified from University College London (UCL) where he was also awarded a First-Class Honours degree in molecular medicine. He subsequently completed his urological training in the London Deanery rotating through the Charing Cross Hospital, The Royal Marsden Hospital, Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals and the Whittington Hospital. He subsequently undertook a uro-oncology fellowship in robotic surgery at Guys and St Thomas' hospital. He has a PhD from University College London (UCL) into focal therapy for newly diagnosed prostate cancer and cancer that has recurred after previous radiotherapy. He has helped design and deliver multiple clinical trials for primary, metastatic and radio-recurrent prostate cancer and is currently part of the imperial prostate (IP) group at Imperial College London (ICL).He has been an advocate for collaborative and also trainee led research and previously spent five years as vice chair of the British Urology Researchers in Surgical Training (BURST) research collaborative. Expertise Raised PSA, investigations for prostate cancer, MRI image-fusion targeted prostate biopsies, robotic radical prostatectomy, focal therapy, high intensity focused ultrasound, cryotherapy, enlarged prostate, benign prostate hyperplasia, Rezum water vapour therapy.
